Phantom Arabesque: Rolls-Royce Celebrates Middle Eastern Heritage

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, through its Private Office Dubai, unveils the Phantom Arabesque, the first-ever Phantom with a laser-engraved bonnet. Inspired by traditional Middle Eastern mashrabiya latticework, the one-of-one commission features marquetry in Blackwood and Black Bolivar, embroidered motifs, and a hand-painted coachline. Bespoke Lead Designer Michelle Lusby and the Exterior Surface Centre team, led by Tobias Sicheneder, bring five years of innovation to this extraordinary expression of culture, craft, and luxury

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has introduced the Phantom Arabesque, a one-of-one commission that brings together masterful craftsmanship and the architectural heritage of the Middle East. Curated by the Private Office Dubai, this Phantom is the first in Rolls-Royce history to feature a laser-engraved bonnet, a technique developed over five years, alongside a Gallery of intricate marquetry and a series of Bespoke interior motifs inspired by traditional mashrabiya latticework.

The Phantom Arabesque is not merely a vehicle, it is a moving work of art, exemplifying Rolls-Royce’s commitment to innovation, cultural storytelling, and Bespoke luxury.

Architectural Inspiration in Motion

Mashrabiya latticework, a hallmark of Middle Eastern architecture, traditionally provides privacy while allowing airflow and filtered light. Its geometric forms are as functional as they are decorative, perfectly attuned to the climate and culture of the region.

In Phantom Arabesque, Rolls-Royce reinterprets these patterns across multiple surfaces: the first-ever laser-engraved bonnet, hand-crafted marquetry in the interior Gallery, embroidered motifs on headrests, and subtle illuminated details.

“Mashrabiya is one of the Middle East’s most enduring design languages. Our goal was to capture not just its visual beauty, but its qualities of light, privacy, and movement. We wanted it to feel natural, inspired, and unmistakably Rolls-Royce.”

The First Laser-Engraved Bonnet

Phantom Arabesque introduces a world-first in automotive craftsmanship: a bonnet engraved using a patented laser technique. Inspired by the Italian sgraffito tradition, this method reveals contrasting layers of paint with exceptional precision.

A darker base coat is first applied and sealed beneath multiple layers of clearcoat, then a lighter top layer is added. The mashrabiya pattern is engraved to a depth of 145–190 microns, creating a subtle three-dimensional texture. Each section is meticulously hand-sanded to ensure a flawless finish, resulting in a surface that responds beautifully to light.

“Laser engraving allows us to create a surface that is precise, alive, and responsive to light. Phantom Arabesque represents the first chapter of a technique that will open entirely new possibilities for future Bespoke clients.”

Exterior Craft and Detail

The Phantom Arabesque is presented in a two-tone finish, with Diamond Black on the main body and Silver on upper surfaces. A hand-painted Short Coachline, featuring a mashrabiya motif, traces the car’s silhouette. The illuminated Pantheon grille, framed in Dark Chrome, and the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine subtly uplit, enhance its presence. Twenty-two-inch part-polished alloy wheels complete the refined exterior.

The interplay of light across the bonnet engraving, coachline, and grille reinforces Rolls-Royce’s philosophy that heritage and innovation should be inseparable.

Interior Craftsmanship

Inside, Phantom Arabesque offers a cabin of understated elegance. The Gallery, spanning the full width of the fascia, features marquetry crafted from Blackwood and Black Bolivar, echoing the mashrabiya pattern and complemented by an offset clock. Selby Grey and Black leather, paired with embroidered motifs on the headrests, provides a calm and refined environment.

Starlight Doors, trimmed with Selby Grey piping and contrast stitching, create a subtle ambient glow, while illuminated treadplates mirror the bonnet’s engraved pattern. Each detail is designed to engage the senses while maintaining an atmosphere of quiet sophistication.

Bespoke Collaboration

Rolls-Royce Private Office hubs, including the Dubai team behind Phantom Arabesque, operate on an invitation-only basis, allowing clients to collaborate closely with designers. This ensures every Bespoke vehicle is both technically impeccable and personally meaningful.

In Phantom Arabesque, every motif and detail reflects the patron’s appreciation for cultural heritage and contemporary craft. Phantom Arabesque exemplifies the integration of traditional design and modern techniques. Mashrabiya patterns are expressed across paint, wood, leather, and illumination, creating a cohesive, immersive experience. The five-year development of the laser-engraving technique demonstrates Rolls-Royce’s dedication to innovation and precision.

“Our goal was to capture the essence of mashrabiya in ways that feel alive and accessible, while pushing the boundaries of what Bespoke design can achieve. Phantom Arabesque shows that luxury can be creative, culturally rooted, and technically groundbreaking at the same time.”

Michelle Lusby, Bespoke Lead Designer, Private Office Dubai

Delivered to its Middle Eastern patron, Phantom Arabesque now takes pride of place in a private collection. It is designed to be experienced and admired, a moving tribute to craftsmanship and heritage. Phantom Arabesque is a celebration of identity, blending tradition and innovation in a vehicle that tells a story of culture, design, and refined luxury.

Setting a New Benchmark

By combining the first laser-engraved bonnet with a fully realised interior, Phantom Arabesque establishes a new standard for Bespoke automotive design. Rolls-Royce has created a car that is visually captivating, technically innovative, and culturally resonant. Through paint, marquetry, leather, and subtle illumination, Phantom Arabesque illustrates that craftsmanship is about narrative as much as skill. It is contemporary yet rooted in heritage, commanding yet understated, and unmistakably Rolls-Royce.

Phantom Arabesque is a celebration of artistry, innovation, and cultural inspiration, demonstrating how Bespoke luxury can transcend tradition to create something entirely new.
